Have you ever put off a task because you just knew it would take forever? I have a challenge for you: time some of your most common tasks. Spoiler alert: I already know what you’ll find. You will find, like I did, that those tasks I had been putting off took just minutes to do. For instance, I can unload, or load the dishwasher in FIVE minutes. I can start a load of laundry or move it to the dryer in less than five minutes. Now, let’s not be unrealistic – folding and putting away laundry takes longer than 5 minutes! But not as much time as you might think. I remember when my four kids were little, and we had a weekend of fun with the stomach bug. EVERYTHING needed washing. I managed to get it all washed and dried but despaired of the perceived time it would take me to fold and put away. So, I timed it. For lots of tiny clothes, sheets, blankets, and towels, it took me 45 minutes. That was to sort, fold, and put away! I was shocked – so much so that it impacted my laundry-time-vision permanently. I can now look at my laundry and say, “well, I know it will be less than 45 minutes!” Try it! Time all those dreaded tasks to get a realistic time commitment to complete the task. I think you will be amazed at how the actual time is so much more manageable than the perceived time!
